I wouldn't pay to see Bryn anymore mate. DH's technique has served him much better than Bryn's.

Thank you Gabba, I've missed this scene! I think they did a better job in this one than in the concert production.

ABSOLUTE NONSENSE! Bryn Terfel is singing fabulously and his recent recording proves it. He sang Falstaff at the Met during Volpe's last season and he absolutely was the talk of the town. That was the ONLY production worth seeing at the Met that season.

You can't compare them, they are both wonderful in their own way, but they have two different voices. Bryn is bass-baritone, listen to his Prince Igor and compare to Hvorostovsky.

I admit that I know almost nothing about singing (I'm a professional pianist, living in Wales, Bryn's home country) but as an 'amateur listener' to opera I have been so irritated by Bryn's mannerism in recent years of continually scooping up from below the note that I have been avoiding him. But then I heard Bryn's amazing Wotan on BBC TV, from London! The staging was dreadful, but the singing was superb. Do not miss Bryn's outstanding Wotan if you get a chance to hear it live.

I have seen them both at opera and in concerts. Bryn is far superior in opera, Dimitri can be very 'wooden' in his acting and the way he moves across the stage. Dimitri is better when he performs on his own at concert. They are both great. We are so lucky to have both of them in Cardiff in the same year. I always wonder if British are not so polite to foreigners, we might have Bryn as the overall winner.

Was that in Die Walkure? or one of the other Ring opera? Bryn pulled out for the current production of the Ring Cycle, replaced by Sir John, who is great as well. Saw Die Walkure last week with Domingo and Sir John in Cycle 2. Got Cycle 3 tickets as a gift from a kind friend so going again starting with Das Rheingold tomorrow, Domingo on Sunday. As for staging, they vary. I do not like the DULL grey giant platform which rotate 360 degrees in all directions but love the ring of fire!

battycys: it was in Das Rheingold. I first came to know that work through the Karajan DG recording (still unsurpassed, in my view) so it was Fischer-Dieskau's superb characterisation of Wotan which always set the standard for me (frankly, the Solti Das Rheingold doesn't have such good characterisation in any of the roles and the Levine & Boulez sets are worse). But Bryn was a match for Fischer-Dieskau!

As Bryn pulled out of this current Ring Cycle production, sadly I have not seen him in Das Rheingold. I saw him with Domingo in Die Walkure in a concert version, as one of the Proms at RAH, about three years ago. The cast was the same as in ROH the month before, without the staging. Rather strange, first time I see an 'opera' with singers in front of the orchestra! Saw Bryn in Tosca with Angela Gheorghiu and in the title role, Gianni Schicchi. Very different roles, Bryn was wonderful in both.

What kills me about ... ( 10 months ago by Jacobitess)
What kills me about this story is that everything seems so inevitable. It would have been wrong for Onegin to have married Tatyana in that wretched moral state. He needed the tragedy to wake him up, but then he needed time to recover any feeling other than sorrow, but Tatyana did have to marry and couldn't wait...OI...there doesn't seem to be any way this could have ended happily, but for Onegin to have been virtuous from the beginning.

No, he was eating a sandwhich wrapped in tin foil. I couldn't believe my eyes or ears. Not to mention he sang along with Eugene in the 3rd act. I had never yelled at a person for making noise at an opera...until then. I got applause at curtain call along with Dmitri haha.
