Misirkov noted even in 1903 that the potential of the Macedonian Bulgarians to emerge as a separate Southern Slavic ethnic group on the balkans (as they are today) is entirely possible. The Macedonian Bulgarians have evolved differently in every possible way from the North and South Bulgarians except language.
